NEW MEDIA PROGRAM INTENSHIP AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY (SUMMER 2006) About the Museum and the New Media Program ----------------------------------------------------------------- The National Museum of American History dedicates its collections and scholarship to inspiring a broader understanding of our nation and its many peoples. We create learning opportunities, stimulate imaginations, and present challenging ideas about our country's past. The New Media Program strives to create experiences that extend the Museum's exhibitions and collections and unite the best qualities of a Museum visit with the flexibility and interactivity of new media technology. Goals of the program include: 1. Encourage interaction and participation inside and outside the Museum 2. Promote the Museum and attract audiences 3. Use electronic media to support and disseminate Museum scholarship About the 2006 Summer Internship Opportunities ------------------------------------------------------------------ As an intern in the New Media Program you will assist with the day-to-day operations of the museum's Web sites and other special new media projects. You will have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills and gain exposure to the process of developing and publishing museum content. Interns collaborate with curators, museum educators, exhibition designers, and others on various projects including online exhibitions, collections information, educational activities and materials, resources for scholars, and a wide range of visitor services. Depending on your interests and skills, duties may include researching and gathering material for the site, image scanning, graphic design, HTML programming, technology research, general site maintenance, and miscellaneous office duties. Potential areas for content development include the HistoryExplorer (http://americanhistory.si.edu/explorer); a new Web feature about music; potential podcasting opportunities; and "Featured Object" pieces by written by curators about a favorite object or an artifact s/he helped to collect for the Museum (e.g., http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object.cfm?key=35&objkey=753 ). The Museum has also recently launched a monthly e-mail newsletter and you will have the opportunity to help build the subscriber list, promote the newsletter to our audiences, and steer the content of the newsletter each month. Projects will be designated based on your individual goals and talents. Your skills and experience ------------------------------------ At this time we are looking for applicants with basic or intermediate skills in digital photo editing, HTML programming/Dreamweaver. Project management and Web writing skills are a plus. You will enhance your current skills by learning to produce new media products in a museum setting, including: asset management, handheld technologies, e-mail newsletters, and online educational experiences. You should be at least upper-level college or graduate student and have an interest in American history or museums or in using new media technologies for educational purposes.
