Collections Internship, Summer 2006

 

Responsibilities:

The Collections Intern will work directly with the Registrar/Collections Manager and work both with the Museum’s artifact and archival collections.  Work will include organizing and documenting the Museum’s important collection of maritime artwork, including inventory and cataloging work. The intern will also stabilize and improve the storage conditions of the Museum’s significant collection of photographic materials and scrapbooks, which document the maritime heritage of Manitowoc and Wisconsin dating from the early 20th century.  The intern will help with additional collections and research projects as needed. 

 

Qualifications:

Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong organizational skills. Preference will be given to candidates who express a desire to pursue a career in museums, archives, or a closely related field, and who are enrolled in a related academic program. Some previous experience in museums, archives, or a related field is desired.

 

Compensation is $7.00 per hour for up to 250 hours of paid work; start date and work schedule are flexible.

Grace E. Swensen and Robert J. Peppard Collections Internship, Summer 2006

 

Responsibilities:

Intern will work with the Registrar/Collections Manager to accession, catalog and digitize the Grace E. Swensen and Robert J. Peppard Collection of photographic materials, postcards,  slides, scrapbooks and other materials.  This extensive collection documents several types of Great Lakes vessels, including car ferries, tugs, dredges, passenger vessels, freighters, private boats, bulk carriers, whalebacks and others, along with several important Great Lakes transportation companies.

 

Qualifications:

Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong computer skills. Preference will be given to candidates who express a desire to pursue a career in museums, archives, or a closely related field, and who are enrolled in a related academic program. Some previous experience in museums, archives, or a related field is desired. Familiarity with Past Perfect Museum Software is a plus.

 

Compensation is $7.00 per hour for up to 430 hours of paid work.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Education Internship, Summer 2006

 

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is offering an education internship for the summer of 2006.  This internship will pay $7/hour for up to 250 hours of paid work with a schedule to be determined between the intern and the Museum Educator.

 

The education intern will work with the Museum Educator and will also interact with other Museum staff.  The internship will focus primarily on the Museum’s adult and family programming, including audience research and evaluation. Your internship will mainly consist of the following project goals:  

 

1.      Research and identify the needs of different Museum audiences.

2.      Evaluate current public programming at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

3.      Conduct a member survey to identify the specific preferences of Museum members.

4.      Work with the Museum Educator to develop a framework for future public programming.

 

The intern should have the following skills: independent work habits; strong research skills; interest in enhancing people’s quality of life; excellent written and verbal skills including phone communication; organized and focused.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Curatorial Internship, Summer 2006

The Curatorial Intern will focus on exhibits research, production and maintenance; however, responsibilities may also include conservation and collections management work. The intern’s primary projects will relate to the Museum’s upcoming temporary exhibits, and may include identifying and researching potential items for exhibit, coordinating incoming loan items, and script writing. The intern will work directly with the Curator or a department head responsible for the project, under the supervision of the Curator. Projects will involve various Museum resources such as ship's plans, photographic, and art archives; film and manuscript collections; three-dimensional artifacts, historic small boat collection; or the Museum's World War II submarine U.S.S. COBIA.

Qualifications:

Must have excellent research and writing skills, be self-motivated, and able to work independently with little supervision. 

 

Compensation is $7.00 per hour for up to 250 hours of paid work; start date and work schedule are flexible.
