2006: Building Pathology: Structural Systems

This,
the first course in
a sequence, deals specifically with issues of aging structural materials and
systems. Based on the book “Building Pathology:
Deterioration, Diagnostics, and Intervention,” written by the instructor to support
his University of Pennsylvania course, this course addresses common mechanisms of
deterioration, emphasizes traditional materials and methods of
construction, and exposes students to basic engineering
concepts.

8-11, 2006: Building Pathology:
Vertical Closure

This course
emphasizes elements and systems which comprise the exterior envelope
of the building, specifically the walls and openings in those walls. Traditional materials and construction
methods will be stressed with considerable
attention to retrofitting buildings for changing environmental
conditions.

17-20, 2006 Historic Masonry
Restoration

This 4-day
“hands-on” course is tailored to fill the individual needs of the workshop
participants. The expert instruction encompasses a broad range of historic
masonry restoration practices Workshop participants will participate in the
construction of a simple lime kiln. Participants will burn limestone rock in the
kiln, slake the resulting quick lime into lime putty, mix the lime putty with
sand into a mortar, and use it to repoint mortar joints on historic buildings on
the Campbell Center campus.
Friends Scholarships are available ($300) to Friends members ($60). Students registering for two courses are eligible for
Teeter Family Scholarships. Teeter Family Scholarships are designed to
defray registration fees for the lower priced
course.

for Historic Preservation Studies offers continuing education to meet the
training needs of individuals who work to preserve historic landscapes and
cultural, historic, and artistic properties.
Workshops and courses last from two days to two weeks. Students are
housed in dormitories on the campus of the
former Shimer College, a group of 14 structures listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. Mt. Carroll is in the Northwest
corner of Illinois, about 2 ˝ hours from Chicago.
