You'll have to Google several of these topics to find specific articles. But for now I would recommend:

1) Towards A New Museum by Victoria Newhouse - this should address questions 3 and 4

2) Recent New York Times articles on the brand new High Museum of Art expansion designed by Renzo Piano (the original building was designed by Richard Meier) - relevant to question 4

3) Americans for the Arts (www.artsusa.org) has a lot of information on the economic impact of the arts and arts and economic development - relevant to question 1

4) Any of the recent debates on the Barnes Foundation Art Collection in Philadelphia and whether or not the collection should be moved - relevant to question 2

5) Any information you might find on the Georgia Aquarium, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, or the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga - relevant to question 1

Meanwhile, it would be great if you could publish the course reading list to MUSEUM-L once it is completed.

I'm writing on behalf of a professor in NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program.  For a class on
Contemporary Cultural Institutions, we are looking for readings (academic articles, anthologies, governmental
reports) on the following topics:

1) The value of such institutions, cultural, and otherwise: eg. the impact of Gehry's Bilbao Guggenheim on
revitalizing that port, or Baltimore's aquarium.  In short, what are some of the reasons mayors want museums?

2) The compromises such institutions negotiate between private funders' wishes and their public mission.

3) Anything on the process of assessing the viability of a new cultural institution eg. the new Baryshnikov Center
at NYU.  What type of studies are done beforehand, and so on.

4) The trend for building flashy extensions by prestigious architects, and the relation of that to other
destinations for the money eg. to investing in collections, etc..

Any suggestions are welcome, and I'll be happy to answer any questions about the course that you may have.
Please reply off-list.

Best,

Jeff Martin
