For digital photography projects it is a good idea to include in each digital image a GretagMacbeth ColorChecker chart or the GretagMacbeth Mini ColorChecker chart (which is best for small to medium size objects), along with a scale marker. For scale markers we often use 6" photo evidence scales that you can find from places like www.redwop.com or www.evidentcrimescene.com , among other places. If you are storing/archiving the digital images on CDs, it would be good to use gold "archival" cds like the ones Mitsui makes, stored in tyvek sleeves (available from Hollinger among other places) or other archival containers. >>> [log in to unmask] 01/18 11:27 AM >>> Denise, Digital photography will probably be more useful and cost effective for the small museum. Image files can be copied and transferred more easily, also sorted, viewed, searched, and browsed. They may never need to print them out, but if they do, than they may print them at whatever size and quality fits their needs. I recommend keeping a photo-log, even if you include the accession number in the photo, which lists the frame #, accession #, and a very brief - couple word -description to aid in renaming the images with the objects' accession numbers. You may also want to include measurements on your list or by including a measuring tool/color control in the photo. -Andrea Cakars --- Denise Haynes <[log in to unmask]> wrote: --------------------------------- Greetings to the list, I have volunteered to photograph the collection of the local historic house/museum (READ SMALL MUSEUM/ Practically Nonexistant Budget!). Having said that, I would like some advice from the sages on this list regarding my endeavor.... The board wants the collection photographed with a digital camera; fair enough, but, in light of the non-archival quality of digital photography, shouldn't I also photograph it with B&W film? (I need to speak to members of the board to get needed supplies) Any additional advice on proceding with what almost seems like a daunting task is welcomed! (i.e. what type of paperwork to keep..etc.) Thanks so much in advance!
