Announcing:  2006 Summer Museum Internships
 
Objective:  Cedar Grove, Thomas Cole National Historic Site, seeks part-time and full-time summer interns for museum internships at the historic home and studio of the artist, Thomas Cole, in Catskill, NY.  Cedar Grove is an affiliate of the National Park Service and owned by the Greene County Historical Society.  The site preserves and interprets the primary residence and workplace of the nineteenth-century landscape artist Thomas Cole.
 
Position Description:  Interns at Cedar Grove will work closely with the Executive Director and the Education Director on projects in the areas of exhibition research, planning and design; special event planning and facilitation; interpretive program research and development; volunteer coordination and visitor services.  This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in all areas of museum operation.  Academic credit can be arranged for students who complete a minimum number of hours per week, as determined by their college or other academic institution.  Internship hours may consist of a combination of on-site and off-site work, with at least 50% to be conducted on-site at Cedar Grove.
 
Responsibilities:  Interns will be responsible for the completion of personal projects dependent on areas of interest and institutional needs.  A percentage of time each week will be dedicated to filling visitor services needs i.e. working in the Visitor Center or providing house and studio tours.  Training for these responsibilities will be provided.
 
Qualifications:  Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for these positions.  Students who have completed at least two semesters of study in the following fields:  American History, American Studies, Art History, Education, Humanities, Museum Studies or Public History, are encouraged to apply.  The successful candidates will be able to work well alone and with others.  Cedar Grove interns must enjoy working with the public.

Exhibition-Research Internship opportunity - Spring 2006
 
Objective:  Cedar Grove, Thomas Cole National Historic Site, seeks one part-time exhibition-research intern for the spring 2006 semester.  The intern will conduct historical research about the life and career of landscape artist Jasper Cropsey, as well as perform other exhibition and curatorial duties. The successful candidate must be able to attend regular weekly meetings and hold frequent correspondence with museum staff at the historic home and studio of the artist, Thomas Cole, in Catskill, NY.  Cedar Grove is an affiliate of the National Park Service and owned by the Greene County Historical Society.  The site preserves and interprets the primary residence and workplace of the nineteenth-century landscape artist Thomas Cole.
 
Position Description:  The spring exhibition-research intern will conduct historical research about the life and career of nineteenth-century American landscape artist Jasper Cropsey, as well as perform other exhibition and curatorial duties.  The successful candidate will also compile research findings into a cohesive narrative that will be used in the exhibitions catalogue, volunteer training and historical interpretation of the site.  The intern will work closely with the Executive Director, Education Director and Curatorial Committee Members at Cedar Grove.   Academic credit can be arranged for students who complete a minimum number of hours per week, as determined by their college or other academic institution.  Internship hours may consist of a combination of on-site and off-site work, with at least 50% to be conducted on-site at Cedar Grove.
 
Responsibilities:  The selected individual will be asked to conduct research in various art history repositories in the Hudson River Valley.  Some travel is necessary for the completion of this project in addition to coordinating research time at sites selected by the intern and museum staff.  Documentation of research and incorporation of findings into site documentation are expected from the incumbent at the end of the internship. 
 
Qualifications:  Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in American Studies, Art History, Humanities, Museum Studies or Public History, are encouraged to apply.  The successful candidates will be able to work well alone and with others.
