Curator of Education

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, MN is seeking an energetic, highly organized, and creative museum professional to serve as its Curator of Education.  The successful applicant will plan, develop, implement and oversee all aspects of museum educational programs.  Responsibilities include developing comprehensive school programs with local and regional schools (preschool through university level); establishing and managing a docent program; recruiting and training docents and other volunteers; developing public programs for the general public; creating gallery didactics and resources for different age groups; cultivating strong partnerships with other community institutions; and grant writing for educational programs.  The candidate will also serve on an exhibits team and oversee evaluation of exhibits.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task as well as strong leadership skills and experience working with volunteers.  Candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a passion to integrate the museum as a resource for learning. Enthusiasm, commitment, and a passion for museum education are key.  Museum education experience required, and an M.A. in museum studies, education, or art history preferred.

The Museum will open in 2006 with the Burrichter/Kierlin Marine Art Collection, on loan to the museum, featuring oil paintings that focus on the transition from sail to steam and 3-dimensional marine objects; the Leo Smith Folk Art Collection inspired by the people and the natural environment of the Mississippi River Valley; and the Henry Bosse Photographs and Maps Collection. Bosse was acclaimed by the Getty Museum as being "one of America's photographers of genius."  The 287 foot Dredge William A. Thompson will become an exhibit to the museum in 2007. Curator of Collections and Exhibits

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual to serve as its Curator of Collections and Exhibits.  The successful candidate is responsible for overseeing all aspects of collections management and exhibitions including databasing and digital archiving of collections; coordination and processing of loans; maintenance of collections records and inventory; identification of conservation needs; and execution of collections management policies and procedures. Additionally, the successful applicant will work as part of an exhibits team; plan, develop, fabricate, and install exhibits; work with the Museum Director to develop exhibit budgets; assist with grant writing and reporting for exhibits and collections projects; and contribute to the design and creation of exhibit catalogs.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant will demonstrate strong organizational skills, and have previous experience with and knowledge of museum collections management and exhibit design and implementation.  Candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to work well with others, and be committed to the mission and vision of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. M.A. in museum studies or related field highly desired, as well as experience with Past Perfect (or other collections databases) and graphic design programs.
