We do a Silent Film Program every year, and have recently started offering a Holiday Film Program as well.  Our screenings take place in a 1920s era movie palace that seats 1100 people and we use historic projectors and 35mm prints rather than video projection.  In addition to SWANK, another organization you might want to check out is KINO (www.kino.com).  They are a non-theatrical distributor like SWANK but have a different selection of films including many classics.  Be sure to keep in mind that finding a specific film can be challenging (especially if you are not using VHS or DVD) so you may need to contact the studios directly in some cases.  We recently worked with Warner Bros. to show the 1938 version of “A Christmas Carol” and it was a fairly painless process.  The trickiest thing about working directly with the studios is figuring out who now owns the rights to films produced by studios that no longer exist.  (For instance, you need to contact Warners in order to show MGM films.)  If you go through a distributor like SWANK or KINO, you don’t have to worry about such things.

Hope that helps!

Subject: Movie series

Thinking about public programs for a future exhibition, we are considering a movie series. I'm aware of the licensing requirements, but I have no idea how one goes about finding the actual film to show. Do you rent a 35mm from a distributor or project a DVD or VHS? The venue we have in mind is the lecture hall at the Library of Virginia, which seats about 250 people. The films we're thinking about date from the 1940s to the 1960s with a couple of more recent vintage. Oh, I should say that the theme is how Virginia is used in films.

Thanks.
