We show movies weekly at our museum/library. We have a license through Movie Licensing USA -- 1-888-267-2658. www.movlic.com They work with Walt Disney, Warner Bros., DreamWorks, MGM, Paramount -- just to name a few. The cost is relatively inexpensive and our patrons love the service. There are rules relating to advertising, but we don't have a problem complying with them. Our museum has a Panasonic projector set up for both DVD and VHS. With the quality of the projector, we prefer to use DVDs -- VHS comes out very grainy even if it is a new cassette. If you have some archival films we would recommend having them converted to DVD most local production companies can do this for you -- but that can be expensive. Because we are in a library most time we just use DVDs in our collection but we have on occasion had to run out and rent one. Tracey K. I need to pack them in boxes for a future move and am very concerned about how to properly package those with flaking surfaces. Stephen Koob told me of an article in the works for JAIC by Dawn Kimbell and Pam Hatchfield. Is there any way I could be sent an electronic version? I am not a member of JAIC. I was told it had great images and information that would help me. If Ms. Kimbell or Ms. Hatchfield are on the list I would greatly appreciate your help. They have a really huge catalogue. Generally if you don't charge admission to the film you can get the rights to show it for a very low fee (a few hundred dollars at most). If you charge admission, then you have to document your attendance--if it's more than a certain number of people, and that number will vary according to the film, then you have to pay a percentage of the total you have taken in. Some films also have restrictions on how many people total you can show it to--for some films it is about 200 people, for others it's 750 or 1000. However, if you show a Swank film there are limits to how much you can advertise the showing. You can't buy advertising time or space, for example, but you can put it in your newsletters or mail a flyer to your membership or put a notice on your own website. The peculiar thing is that they apparenlty measure 50 inches by 22 inches. As they are in storage in an upstate facility we do not know what they look like in person. We were wondering if anyone could offer some insight. Are they really napkins or are they small tablecloths? In order to avoid signs of wear and tear would they have rotated a set of 12 tablecloths? If they are napkins, do larger napkins of this size and time period have a special name? Are there others that exist of this size and proportion? Any help would be much appreciated. They are indeed a great outfit. Despite the many limitations I have read on this thread, I always found SWANK was not so concerned about the fine print, and were always eager to help non-profits in any way possible. I promoted nautical film classics outdoors, on the tallship Star of India, shown on the sail, for 12 years. They were fine with whatever promotions I utilized to bring in a larger audience. I also found that if SWANK didn't have the exact film, I could find it on VHS or DVD at a different source, and SWANK could authorize the showing, usually at the same price.
