I was just at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati and one of their exhibits, containing images of oppression around the world, had a disclaimer on the wall prior to entering the gallery that went something like this: "Due to strong images of non-freedom, this exhibit may not be suitable for all audiences." They did have some images of starving children and physical violence that would probably terrify young viewers. In fact, a friend tells me that the Cincinnati Public Schools won't take school groups younger than 6th grade to the Center after parents of younger students complained. I have used the phrase "We recommend that parents pre-view this exhibition prior to allowing children in the galleries" to indicate that there may be objectionable content in the exhibition. I posted this prior to visitors stepping into the gallery itself. The admissions clerks ensure that those who bring children are aware of the specific nature of the material that may cause concern. -----Original Message----- From: Museum discussion list [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Jen Hughes Sent: Friday, December 16, 2005 2:51 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: mature audiences I am seeking advice on the most tactful, professional way to indicate that an exhibit is for mature audiences only, without disrespecting the artist or the intelligence of the museum visitors.
