Hi Gail, We generally acquire interns on an as needed basis. Some students just want the experience, and we seek to pay them a little for their time. However, students can go through either the art history or public history departments for class credit(1 to 3 hours), in which case a faculty member oversees their work and typically requires a final paper of some kind. We recently had a grad student in history in the office for a semester, and his work became a significant element of his master's thesis. Our curator intends to hire a worker next semester so she does not have to work so hard(interlude for hysterical laughing), and another student has volunteered to work with me next semester. Neither of those appointments will seek class credit. We also have one regular scholarship that pays for a quarter-time student worker to help our curator of exhibitions, but that also does not accrue class credit. Here are some of the issues I am seeking help on. Do the students receive course credit and if so, who is listed as the professor and/or supervisor? Is this a grade or pass/fail? What kind of number does it have -- art, art history, other? Do qualified staff members have faculty appointments that allow them to oversee work done in their museum or do faculty members outside of the museum oversee the work? How are the interns selected? Who have oversight of the procedure and responsibility for the students? These are just a few of my questions, but it is a good start. I would appreciate any comments or feedback on this topic. I thank you in advance for taking time to help.
