You do have to
accept that you can't attend all events personally (some people will resent
this, others will understand, try to go to everything sometimes); you also have
to accept that you can give 100% of what the job needs, with intense focus, and
no more. Accept "good enough" instead of "perfect". I think it's fine to bring
your kids to appropriate occasions, knowing that attending to them will affect
your productivity - but at least you're there.
One possibility to
suggest to your board is to hire additional part-time staff by cutting your own
hours - you work 30 or 35 (which we know is really 50+ , but in theory...) - and
the money saved for 10 of your hours buys 20 hours of administrative help, or
visitor services staff. (If you can afford that personally). Having just 8 hours
per week of paid administrative help has made me WAY more productive (I still
work full time), with time to spend on things like raising
money.
Your board defines
the mission and scope of the organization. It is up to them to provide the
resources to accomplish these goals, including human resources (staff,
volunteers). It can't be done by working the director into the ground. At least,
not for long.
As for community -
if it benefits your work or your family directly, do what you can, otherwise -
later.
