MessageDuring many of my internships, the interns were required to wear
uniforms consisting of khakis, polo shirts, and name tags. These looked
appropriate and were functional as they often performed odd tasks without
prior notice. If they were in professional attire (i.e. suits, skirts,
ties, dry clean- only pants), these tasks would be considerably harder, and
they would risk ruining clothing that would be fairly costly to replace, and
sometimes hard to find without driving a great distance.

Professional attire is appropriate in the right situations. However,
interns should also realize that dress varies greatly from museum to museum
or historic site to historic site. There are not hard and fast rules
regulating dress throughout the entire museum world.

  Subject: [MUSEUM-L] intern dress question

For those of you with interns, do you require a uniform or business
professional dress?
We currently have all of our interns wear a uniform that consists of a
polo and khakis but are considering changing to professional attire. I'd
like to know what issues have arisen for those of you who require
professional dress. The uniform is certainly an easy way to go for
everyone, but does it teach students about dressing for the professional
world? And is the lesson worth it for the staff who have to monitor the
interns' clothing?
  Thanks.
