Your question is pretty broad and the answer really depends on what your needs are..how large is your collection? how large is your staff? what type of material do you collect? how do you need to access the information you collect? who needs to access it? how automated is your collections accessioning/cataloguing process? do you loan heavily? borrow heavily? have a conservator (preparator, curator, director, etc.) on staff who needs to access the database?
