Job Title:  Exhibits Specialist

Department:  Curatorial

Reports To:  Chief Operating Officer

FLSA Status:  Part-time hourly, mid to upper twenties, approximately 30 hours per week, depending upon the project.  Some work will need to occur when the Museum is not open to the public.  This position’s work hours will need to be flexible depending upon the time of year and exhibit production schedule.  In general, the position will work three to five days a week.  Terms can be negotiated pending on projects.

Summary: 

Performs administrative and technical work in the conceptual design, construction, installation and maintenance of museum exhibits by collecting and organizing information and artifacts and producing two-dimensional drawings for execution of the design. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  (Other duties may be assigned.)

·         Co-coordinate, fabricate and install temporary exhibits

·         Maintain existing permanent exhibits

·         Use and maintain power equipment

·         Use and maintain Epson large format printer

·         Member of exhibit committee

·         Physical lifting

·         Assist in the development of graphics for exhibits

·         Print large format graphics for the museum

·         Work with other museum professionals, especially with the Desktop Coordinator, Collections Curator and Curator of Museum Advancement

·         Contact, request and receive quotes from outside vendors

·         Develops and administers exhibit budget and purchases supplies

·         Develops and implements special departmental projects

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

·                     Will work with Curator of Museum Advancement to oversee contract labor.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in art, art history, design or related field with coursework in three dimensional design and two years of experience in museum exhibit design; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Prefer experience in the design and construction of educational exhibits.

 

Language Skills: 

Ability to read and understand operating, instructions and safety manuals.

 

Mathematical Skills: 

Ability to calculate figures and understand Imperial measurements.

 

Reasoning Ability: 

Ability to do analytical thinking.  Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.  Ability to deal with various types of problems including problem solving.

 

Computer Skills: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to use the Internet and have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and be able to operate adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:

Must possess artistic mind and understand spatial relationships and aesthetic values.  Know how to properly use power tools.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is situated in an office without windows that doubles as the exhibits prep area.  Must share workshop and use of tools with the facilities department.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low, but can be high while working in the shop.  Must share workshop with another employee.
