My thoughts have been with my colleagues in New Orleans since Sunday.  I hope institutions as well as collections and most of all, the people who watch over them, will weather this storm.

Two years ago at the AAM Annual Meeting, many of us saw a city that will be forever changed by this mess.  When the water recedes, maybe some of us can go down and lend a hand.

Communications are going to be really sketchy for a while.  I have been trying a friend's cell phone for two days without success.  And with no electricity, there's no recharging the things anyway.  We'll have to wait and see.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Moving on to real concerns...

Has anyone heard from our colleagues in the Louisiana / Miss / Alabama area? Phones and electricity appear to be non-existence, but if anyone has heard or read about the museums, galleries, etc. of the area, please post to the list. Houston hotels are packed with people from the area that evacuated before the storm. The pictures this morning from the flooding in New Orleans and the destruction all over Mississippi are dismal.

In addition to dealing with the disaster recovery, most of the nonprofit cultural organizations in that area are going to be significantly affected by the economic conditions that will likely prevail in the area for a while. As philanthropy shifts its focus to emergency relief and basic needs, what will happen to the cultural institutions? What can we, cultural workers, do to help?
