Despite the impending hurricane, visitors mingled with Louisiana dignitaries, politicians and company officials before the festivities were cut short when the New Orleans mayor ordered the city evacuated, a release said. When the opening day affair closed early, employees secured the building and artifacts from the storm. The attraction is on the third floor of its building, and sits on the highest ground in the city. "It was a harrowing day preparing for Katrina, but no matter what the result of the hurricane, we are sure that the awesome spirit of the people of New Orleans will prevail," said Greg Stem, Odyssey's co-founder, in a release.
