Your comments are supposedly disarmingly convincing! However,
there is a very BIG catch to it, and that is Postings, such as Mr. Bottoms are
clearly hate talk sugar-coated for a Public which has been numbed down to
almost near total ignorance and bliss.
Your comments could have carried greater weight had you also addressed
how to avoid Partisan Agendas and the newly ascending Religious Extremism into
all these.
Over simplification of complex political and religious and other
agendas while simultaneously promoting extremism and hatred and fear mongering
to advance ANOTHER failed socio-political doctrine and ramming a hate
filled religious philosophy down the throats of the Professionals in the Museum
World are NOT addressed by your simplistic and very disturbing Posting to this
List.
What is next? Museums preserving the symbols of how a Whole
Nation was duped and numbed down to Atrocities? Turkey 1915, Germany 1930s, and USA
2000s springs into my mind as very good examples.
From whose perspective are you looking at? I refuse to surrender
the Flag and the Mantle of Patriotism to you or to Mr. Bottoms or to Mr. Pat
Robertson's zealot fans who constitute the ranks of our present
Administration!. And I have taken great offense at his bigotry and the
ignorance and the ensuing desire to justify such Hate Mongering that is hidden
well in it.
Please do NOT justify such Hate Talk! That is NOT
Tolerance! That is INCITEMENT.
Don't mimic the Sovietsque Scientists who would bend Science to fit the
mold of Ideology. This ascending Religious Extremism in the Sweet Land of
Liberty is a demented Ideology - we all witnessed a very mild outcropping of it
a few days ago via Mr. Robertson's comments.
Let us have UNIFORM Standards for ALL Humanity.
I don’t feel its non museum related, I don’t even consider
myself a liberal,
I look at all sides and both sides of an issue should be addressed. Imagine
trying to relate the atrocities of WWII without concentration camps, or the
Underground Railroad without reversing it. THERE ARE MANY SIDES TO EVERY
STORY, OUR FUTURE IN MUSEUMS IS CURRENT EVENTS, THEY MAKE THE NEXT MUSEUM
EXHIBIT OR MUSEUM THE ITSELF.

I wish the number of replies this and other non-museum related discussions
were equal to the number of responses I've had when I posted a question
asking for help.
I am a recent graduate of a masters program and am now in my first
"real"
museum job. I look to the list for assistance from senior, more experienced
colleagues.......maybe I'm a naïve gen-xer.....

Hmmm...it's very interesting that while Mr. Bottoms posted a quoted article
that is certainly controversial and expresses the purported opinion of one
retired general. But, Mr. Bottoms has not sunk to the depths of some members
of this list. I've seen posts that referred to him as a "creep" or a
"troll." Most posts dismissed him as a "mad ranter" or an
inflammatory
"baiter."
Mr. Bottom's post has actually helped expose a serious weakness of this
list, and one that prevents me from recommending it to my colleagues and
students. The Museum-L listserv is a very politically polarized list, very
intolerant of any views other than the extremely liberal one. Folks who do
express a contrary view are shouted down and characterized as bumpkins or
ignorant.
I belong to several successful history listservs that could serve as models
to this group. I'd like to recommend MARHST-L, a maritime history listserv.
This list includes members from every corner of the world, and every
political leaning. And because of the maritime content, politics and war are
necessarily part of the discussion. The difference is that these discussions
are framed carefully, respectful to ALL members, regardless of nation or
viewpoint. We would do well to emulate this list.
Successful listservs go beyond civility, to caring. I was in a meeting
yesterday with colleagues from Iraq
and Lebanon.
The gentleman from Iraq
was
describing some of the country's internal problems that have resulted from
the war, and the ensuing poverty. He insisted on using his English, and used
the word "careless" to describe the behaviors of some of his
countrymen:
looting, robbing and mugging other Iraqis. His meaning was that they had no
love of their own countrymen. I've thought lots about his use of the word
and it seems to apply here. We don't mean to hurt with our words, but we are
careless...meaning that we have no love/concern for the folks who are
reading our posts.
