The Operations and Facility
Planning department is seeking candidates for the position of Director of
Planning and Design.
The Director of Planning and Design supervises and manages all architectural
design, facilities planning, and construction efforts with a primary focus on
exhibition design for special exhibitions and permanent collection
presentations for the institution.
Responsibilities
Administer and manage all permanent and special gallery exhibitions, prepare
design criteria with executive curatorial staff and develop design plans to
meet the criteria, supervise and assign work to Staff Architect and other
design staff, manage outside architectural and design consultants, prepare and
control annual department budgets, and consult with other Museum departments,
i.e. graphics, marketing, etc.
Requirements
Advanced degree in Architectural Planning and Design or Exhibition Design is
required. Five years experience in architectural gallery drawing and detailing,
interior museum space planning, materials specifying, and fixture design is
essential. Three years of project management, supervising staff, budget
planning, and maintaining financial controls is required. A combination of
related training, education, and/or experience will be accepted.
Candidate must be a self-starter who operates well independently and who also
has the presence and poise to work effectively with senior executives from a
variety of disciplines as well as with people at various levels both within and
outside the organization. This position also requires demonstrated
interpersonal skills (including a sense of humor), strong oral/written
communication, exercise sound judgment and discretion in the handling of
confidential matters. Must be able to prioritize, organize, meet deadlines, and
work cooperatively with others.
Advanced computer experience in Computer Aided Design programs (CAD) including
Auto-Cad, and similar architectural graphic programs is essential.
