There is a reason fine art shippers are not FedEx. They are specially trained to package and handle works of art and they are shipped in climate controlled ways. They also have fine art insurance coverage. That being said, if the artists are made aware of and are comfortable with the risks, and they sign something that says your museum is not liable for shipping damage, then maybe. Also, if the artwork gets damaged, then you might be without exhibit materials. There might also be some greater ethical responsibility to ensure that art is not damaged. Just my two cents. Is it common practice to send works with such curriers? We are having an exhibition of photographs from Japan, and the artists want to send the works FedEx. And the cost of shippment with an art shipper is prohibitive.
