Dear John, We have quite a large collection of old safes and vault doors. Most of them have decorative paintings of waterfalls, flowers, outdoor scenes, etc. on their doors. Some also have inner doors that are painted. They are all ca. 1900. I have also seen examples with a nautical theme. I suspect that safe companies had decorative painters on their staffs that did nothing but paint the scenes on the doors. It is improbable that you will find a specific artist's name responsible for the painting since this was considered decoration rather than fine art.
