JOB SUMMARY:
- The Curator works under the supervision of the Director to plan, design and build exhibits, care for the museum collection, provide quality educational programming, and other tasks as required.
EXHIBIT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in exhibit planning and development | |
Conducts research and determines artifacts appropriate for new exhibits that can be borrowed or utilized from the museum collection | |
Produces exhibit labels, prepares exhibit space (which includes de-installing previous exhibit and setting up new exhibit furniture), and prepares artifacts for display (which includes cleaning and properly mounting artifacts) | |
Installs exhibits | |
Responsible for exhibit maintenance and repairs, including repairing damaged labels, replacing light bulbs, and cleaning cases and artifacts |
COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizes and conducts Collection Committee meetings on a regular basis | |
Produces and maintains accurate donation and loan documentation, and corresponds with donors | |
Trains and supervises volunteers (including SU work-study students) working in collections | |
Catalogs and maintains accurate records of the museum collection (hard copy and computer database | |
Performs minor conservation work, such as de-acidification and encapsulation of historic documents | |
Maintains storage area | |
Continues cataloguing on the museum collections which includes researching artifact provenance and determining donor | |
Works with lenders to pick up and return artifacts on loan to the museum | |
Ensures that collection is secure from theft, vandalism, or environmental damage |
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING RESPONSIBILITIES:
Answers research questions for the public and allows access of collection materials to various public entities (chamber of commerce, news media) for various projects and publications | |
Handles photograph requests and transactions | |
Works with Director to design educational days for children (which includes research, locating guest speakers, purchasing materials and refreshments) | |
Assists with updating educational materials, including teachers' packets and brochures, and museum publications | |
Conducts on-site tours as needed | |
Provides off-site programs to schools and other institutions |
OTHER:
Greets public | |
Makes museum store transactions | |
Assists in building maintenance, including replacing bulbs, clean-up, etc. | |
Helps maintain building security | |
Assists in special event planning, preparation and execution |
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Master's degree in Museum Studies or related field or Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies with 2 years related experience as curator, registrar, and/or exhibit designer. Must have knowledge of current cataloguing techniques and collections management systems used by the American Association of Museums. Must have ability to use conservation techniques in the preservation of museum collections. Must have ability to perform methodological research. The ability to work with a wide variety of individuals is necessary, as is having a working knowledge of computers and photo imagining.
COMPENSATION:
Up to $30,000 per year, depending on qualifications, plus benefits. ( The WCHM pays $450 per month towards health insurance for the Curator. The Curator is responsible for contracting for his/her health care)
