CURATOR OF ART

 

Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art seeks an experienced and motivated Curator of Art to direct the exhibition and care of the Museum’s collections and further develop the depth and quality of the collections.  Once a grand estate, today Cheekwood encompasses an accredited art museum and 55 acres of botanical gardens.  The Museum collection numbers nearly 8,000 objects and the strengths of the collection include American painting and sculpture, European and American decorative arts, and contemporary sculpture. Cheekwood hosts major exhibitions, a series of contemporary art shows, and displays of its permanent collection.  This position reports directly to the Director of Exhibitions and Programs and works closely with museum, garden and education staffs.

 

Responsibilities: Organizes temporary exhibitions, supervises related traveling exhibitions, directs research and related publications, procures acquisitions, works with collectors, and a range of other curatorial duties.   This person will oversee Registrar, and Prep Staff. 

 

Requirements:  The ideal candidate will possess an excellent knowledge of 19th and 20th century American art and decorative arts as well as a familiarity with museum practices.  An M.A. is essential and Ph.D., preferred.  Candidate must possess excellent writing skills, effective oral and interpersonal skills, and an outgoing personality.
