HOW MUCH POLYESTER IS HISTORICALLY CORRECT?

Is Velcro the same as hook & eye?
Do you think they will notice my Ray-Bans?
What is the difference between costuming and appropriate historical  clothing?
Should I wear original clothing for living history presentations?
Should my museum accept original items to use for educational programming?
Where do I find this stuff?

If you need to know the answers to any of the above questions, you need to
attend MPMA’s Pre-Conference Workshop:  FASHION:  PUTTING ON AN APPROPRIATE
FACE.

So, hurry and register.   Have you registered already?  You can still add this workshop.

What do you do if a special event or an educational program requires historically accurate costuming? What level of accuracy do you want to achieve? What are the appropriate styles? Where do you find suitable ready-made costumes? How much does something like that cost? The answers to these questions and more will be answered in this workshop. General information on the styles and fashions of the late 19th and early 20th century, for both men and women, will be discussed along with information and discussion about the issues and ethics of historical costuming for special events, re-enactments and educational programming. Examples of  various levels of costumes will be available for examination by workshop participants. The workshop presenters have "been there" and "done that" by using costuming and appropriate historical clothing for gallery theater educational programs for the last 15 years and even present an annual "Batter Up:  An 1889 Baseball Game" that uses extensive costuming.

Featured topics:

Basics of clothing identification and authentication
Basic care of historic clothing and accessories in a museum environment
Preventative conservation
Proper exhibition techniques
Factors to consider before accepting historic clothing
Ethics of historical costuming for special events

Reference material will be provided.
