The High Point Museum seeks an energetic candidate for a short-term Registrar position. Position is full time for one year. Primary tasks to include inventorying the collection and reconciling found in collections items. Registrar will be responsible for cataloging incoming, stored, and loaned collections, creating and maintaining computerized and manual records of the collection, and assessing collection conservation needs. Additionally, the Registrar will assist with exhibit installation and information requests.Primary Responsibilities
- Perform an inventory of the museum collection. Work may involve supervising college interns and / or volunteers.
- Reconcile found in collections items.
- Assess collection conservation needs.
- Manage the museum’s permanent collection and process new acquisition. Produce incoming receipts and condition reports. Assign and apply accession numbers. Prepare forms, reports, letters, and evaluations related to the Museum’s collections.
- Maintain the museum’s collections management database. Enter object information, scan images, and update collection information as needed.
- Assist in preparing objects for exhibition and preparation of exhibit mounts.
- Facilitates access to the collection for scholars and researchers.
- Assist with processing incoming photographic reproduction requests and information requests.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Registrar may supervise volunteers and college interns.Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, or related field, Master’s degree preferred. One to three years of museum experience in collections or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of computerized database systems, preferably PastPerfect. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.Job Conditions
Frequent contact with the general public in taking in donations and handling requests for information. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time at a computer. Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.
