Exhibit Design for the Small Museum
Targeting small museums
with limited resources and little design experience,
this course covers
many exhibit basics: basic design and how it applies
to
museum exhibits;
the exhibit development process; conservation concerns;
designing exhibit
labels; exhibit lighting; and accessibility.

Care
of Textiles I
This hands-on
course addresses the
chemical and physical structure of textile
fibers; causes and effects of deterioration;
standards for storage, handling,
and exhibiting textiles; descriptive terminology and
simple tests for fiber
identification; ethical limitations and
considerations for conservation treatment.

Mannequin Workshop
Learn to make a
variety of mannequins in this practical, hands-on
introduction to mannequin construction and the safe display of garments. Also
included are discussions on theory and realism in mannequin design and
materials overview. You'll learn about rigid foam, paper tape
and paper Mache,
rigid netting and screen, Plexiglas, dressmaker forms, and recycled
forms.

Ethnographic Materials of Mixed Composition
This course covers the
special needs of museum collections which incorporate
many cultures, wide time frames and infinite combinations
of materials.
Emphasis is placed on evaluating priorities and
inexpensive solutions for
collection managers with limited budgets and little
assistance.

Studies offers continuing
education to meet the training needs of
individuals
who work to preserve
historic landscapes and cultural,
historic, and artistic
properties. Workshops and
courses last from two days to two weeks.
Students are housed in
dormitories on the campus of the former Shimer College,
a group of 14 structures listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
Mt. Carroll is in the
Northwest corner of Illinois, about 2 ½ hours from Chicago.
