Join us in Omaha this September to discuss “Embracing the Many Faces of our Museums” plus all the hot issues and new trends in the museum field. This meeting is a GREAT networking opportunity – to meet folks from your region, to find out what jobs are opening up and to share challenges and solutions with new and old colleagues. More workshops than ever this year: 1. Fashion: Putting on an Appropriate Face: Learn about the fashions of the late 19th/ early 20th century along with issues and ethics of historical costuming for special events and re-enactments. 2. Needs for a New Museum: Learn from an architect planner the do's and don’ ts behind developing a proposal and cost estimates and how to distinguish between wants and needs. 3. Firearms in the Collection: Learn how to care and store properly your museum’s historic firearms 4. Pack’em Up, Ship’em Out: Learn the tricks of the trade for properly packing your objects for safe transport. 5. Starting a New Tribal Museum/Library: Learn how to establish viable educational institutions for your tribe. 6. There's a Terrorist in Your Museum: Learn how to prepare your museum to be safe and secure for any day of the week. 7. Plastics in Collections: Now you can learn the right way to care for those plastic things in your collection. Sessions will also cover some of the “hot” issues and enable you to engage in discussions with other attendees: teen volunteers, barcode systems for collection tracking, development and renewal for directors, writing effective resumes/cover letters, working with friends organizations, MAP and CAP, interpreting the coins in your collection, exhibit design, the history of the frame, succession planning, strategic planning, dealing with difficult donors, digital collections, insurance basics, conservation strategic planning, what is history, curators working with multiple audiences, and copyright law basics. And some good stuff about living history museums!! ALSO: There will be a Student’s Forum! And a Director’s Forum. Plus smaller gatherings for curators, exhibit designers, volunteer managers, educators, registrars, and those interested in small museums and Tribal museums. You can also attend the annual “Helping Hands Brigade” program that the registrars host at the incredible collection of the steamboat Bertrand at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. Treasures from this 19th-century steamboat that sunk long ago are stored here. Attendees will spend a day with museum colleagues assisting the DeSoto collections staff with several projects, and then will join the rest of the conference attendees on a tour of the entire Refuge. There will be plenty of other tours to: Boys Town, Omaha's really neat museums that will knock your socks off with their collections, plus the zoo and botanical gardens and historic sites in Omaha and nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa. You don’t want to miss this conference.
