I use 7 point Courier New on my 1:12 scale miniature furniture items.  Some of my miniature accessories require as low as 4 point Courier New.  Most of my accessories are too small to have any kind of applied number.  Courier New is legible in as low as 4 point, but I think it would be useless any smaller than that.

I don't know if using Word would be easier, but you can make the font size 6
point or even smaller.  Just highlight the text and then select the pull
down font size option from the menu bar, instead of selecting one from the
list enter the size you want manually.

For those using the printed numbers, what font are you using?  I'd like to
get a consensus as to what works well really small.
