Hi Robert,

Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, is piloting a program with the Carl Sagan Discovery Program (http://montekids.org/about/welcome/sagan/) at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. High school and college Explainers are being trained by Wave Hill museum educators to provide hands-on science programs for short-term patients. If you are interested in this, I can send you more information from work next week.

This year celebrating 25 years of collaboration, Wave Hill has worked with a variety of community-based organizations through the Forest Project. The Forest Project Summer Colllaborative empowers teenagers as citizens of an urban environment, and helps them pursue academic and personal fulfillment. This program uses Bronx natural areas and green spaces for ecological study and job training. It has four tiers: Street Trees Internship, Plant Science Internship, GIS Internship and Junior Crew Leader Internship for 9th-12th grade students. Teenagers are encouraged to return each summer for new and increasingly challenging experiences.

For the Street Trees Internship, Wave Hill collaborates with Trees New York, a community organization, to provide training and youth certification in street tree care for high school freshman. With successful completion of training seminars in tree pruning, interns are licensed by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and Trees New York to care for New York trees.

For the Plant Science and GIS Internships, Wave Hill is partnering with CUNY's Lehman College. High school participants are introduced to a college setting and can earn up to 3 college credits for free.

During the academic year, Wave Hill's Forest Project collaborates with community volunteers and like-minded organizations (examples: Friends of Pelham Bay Park, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation’s Natural Resources Group, JFK Environmental Club) at various sites.

Best regards,

Courtney White
