POSITION DESCRIPTION

Jeannine Rioux Intern

Summer, 2005

Jeannine Rioux, a long-time supporter of Naumkeag, was an enthusiastic
student of history. The Jeannine Rioux Internship is made possible by
her friends and family as a way to help other students learn more about
American history.

Founded in 1891 by landscape architect Charles Eliot, The Trustees of
Reservations is a member-supported, nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable
organization that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, properties of
exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts and
protects special places across the state. The Trustees protects over
35,000 acres of land plus a range of historic structures, including
Naumkeag, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Naumkeag was built in 1886 for the Choate family, who summered here for
the next 71 years. In 1958, Mabel Choate bequeathed the house and
gardens to The Trustees of Reservations. Ever since, the property has
been open to the public as a historic house and gardens. The estate
also included a farm (including a large greenhouse). It is this part of
Naumkeag that needs more research and interpretive programming.

The Jeannine Rioux Intern will conduct original research and create new
interpretive programs for Naumkeag. The program will use a variety of
formats to teach about the history of Naumkeag's farm and vegetable
gardens.

Project outline:
*	Review the extensive literature about Naumkeag and "gentleman's
farms" in general.
*	Catalog artifacts in the 1928 "Jamesway" barn.
*	Conduct original research (e.g. other farm buildings, farmers
and their families, crops, farm production)
*	Develop interpretive themes
*	Write/produce drafts of public programs, school programs,
exhibition panels, PowerPoint presentation, and/or guided tours.

The exact nature of the project(s) will be decided after discussions
with staff at the start of the internship.

Qualifications:
Be enrolled in an accredited graduate level degree program for museum
studies or similar. Experience developing interpretive programs and an
understanding of American history are all desirable. The successful
candidate needs to be willing to collaborate with staff and volunteers
and have a sense of humor.

The Jeannine Rioux Intern will report to the Superintendent of the
Stockbridge Management Unit, and work with the Western Regional Historic
Resources Manager and Naumkeag's Historic Site Administrator. The
position will be for 10 weeks during the summer of 2005; 35-40 hours a
week at $8.50/hour. Housing at an apartment at Naumkeag is provided.
