Under the direction of the Deputy Archivist, the Exhibits Coordinator will be responsible for creating several exhibits a year showcasing the collections of the Hoover Institution Library and Archives and will participate in an active outreach program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and Prepare Hoover Exhibits

*   Perform research, write text, design the overall concept of the exhibits, and mount the materials for display; work closely with the preservation officer and audiovisual specialists in devising and implementing best exhibit display practices and identifying materials requiring conservation treatment.

*  Prepare exhibit publicity materials such as press releases, posters, postcards; organize press conferences; grant interviews; write catalog text and/or articles for the quarterly Hoover Digest.

*      Collaborate with Stanford professors and students for the occasional exhibits they create using Hoover collections, ensuring timely preparation of text and use of proper preservation techniques.

*     Participate in the planning and organizing of exhibit opening receptions and related conferences; supervise volunteers and students for the final stages of exhibit preparations; interact with several other Hoover departments (Press, Public Affairs, Finance, Events) and colleagues as well as with Stanford staff and outside vendors.
                                                   
*       Participate in various events organized by the Hoover Institution, in particular its quarterly retreats and Board of Overseers meetings, by planning exhibit and other tours, by speaking to select groups and guests, and by attending dinners and other social functions.

Participate in Outreach Program

*     Conduct presentations for Stanford and other classes, give tours to visitors and Hoover guests, and speak at various local organizations, publicizing the history of the Hoover Institution, the lives of Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover, and the collections of the Hoover Library and Archives.

Other Duties

*    Manage the Hoover Tower Talks program in conjunction with the Hoover Archives Auxiliary and the Stanford Bookstore.

*    Remain abreast of developments in the field of archival museum displays and attend the annual conference of the American Association of Museums, as well as regional and national archival conferences.

*        Perform related projects and special assignments as requested, including the preparation of budgets and progress reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

In-depth knowledge of twentieth-century history and current events and of preservation theory and practice as applied to exhibit displays.  Knowledge of computer applications, especially word-processing systems; online catalogs and databases such as RLIN and Library of Congress Authority File; and Web-based programs.  Scanning experience and proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, as well as facility with digital image transfers.  Ability to work independently and as a team member and to work effectively and collegially across units and departments.  Exercise superb judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills, and work efficiently under pressure and tight deadlines, especially before exhibit openings.  Occasional evening and weekend hours.  Superb command of spoken and written English with extensive writing experience and good knowledge of editing conventions and notations.  Outstanding interpersonal, research, and organizational skills, including online file management; great attention to detail; and utmost care in handling of archival documents and artifacts.  Ability to lift 25-pound boxes and push heavily loaded book trucks.  Five years’ experience as a museum curator, additional archival or library experience, graduate degree in history or related field, and working knowledge of additional languages strongly preferred.
