This year's journal of the Scottish Society for Art History is OPEN TO ALL. There is no specific theme, and we welcome papers on any aspect of Scottish visual culture, or, more broadly, on any topic that represents the research interests of art historians in Scotland. We want contributions from academics, professionals and post-graduate students currently engaged in art historical research within Scotland, or on a Scottish subject.

This year will be an extra-special journal, as in 2005 the Scottish Society for Art History will be twenty-one years old. From humble beginnings in a garret in Edinburgh University's George Square, the SSAH has grown to be one of the principal forums for the study of Scottish art and art in Scotland, with a membership drawn from a wide constituency and an impressive record of conferences and publications. To celebrate our birthday, the SSAH is hosting a colloquium, Art and Scotland: the last 21 years, to take place in Edinburgh on April 15th and 16th 2005. A series of plenary lectures and chaired panels will address a variety of themes, including aspects of national identity in Scottish art and the art market; the built heritage and restoration; the use and function of art collections and galleries; and the state of contemporary art and education; all issues that have been the subject of (often contentious) debate since the Society was founded in 1984. An exciting group of some of the pre-eminent commentators and experts in the field will offer a vital critique of where art is coming from and where it is going.
