We have used MP3 players for audio tours at Prestongrange Museum (rather than iPods which are very expensive). User feedback was positive -- I had been worried about them being a bit fiddly -- both on quality and ease of use. And much, much cheaper than the 'bespoke' handheld 'wands'. Have you considered making the audio available via cell phone (mobile phone here in the UK). We've done that too. For info, I've just put an article I wrote about the process on the web site at http://www.prestongrange.org/tour/audio_tour.doc. Please feel free to get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Best wishes

Subject: iPods for audio tours

I apologize for any cross postings.

Is anyone out there using iPods for audio tours willing to share the pros and cons? Our museum is exploring this for an upcoming, large exhibition.

Were the costs prohibitive? How user friendly were they? Did visitors use them? Did they require a lot of maintenance? How easy was it to design an audio tour?

Thanks!
