We have selected portions of our bird, mammal, and paleobiology collections available on the web during working hours, using a PC as a server. The URL is http://129.108.140.26:591/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html and the introductory page is http://www3.utep.edu/leb/database/collsearch.htm. Our collection databases (natural and cultural history) are in FileMaker Pro, and the presentations on the web likewise are via standard options in FileMaker Pro. With limited funds and personnel, the web portions have been kind of fast and dirty, but at least allow researchers to see what the collections hold. The data available on the web are held in separate databases for security reasons; these databases have had sensitive information, such as exact locality data (records are given to county level only), omitted. Persons having legitimate reasons for more specific data can contact the appropriate curator. In a number of cases, we have been able to direct inquirers to the web databases rather than having to go into the master databases and prepare a report.
