The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in archives, museums, heritage sites, cultural centres and galleries and supporting arts or cultural groups.

Managing Cultural Organizations
HA 488N (1.5 units)

This on-campus immersion course provides an intensive study of the application of management theory and practice in cultural organizations, with particular emphasis on: characteristics of non-profit cultural organizations; governance and leadership; establishing the mission, goals, and objectives; roles of executive and artistic directors; policy development and implementation; personnel management and team building; financial management; strategic and operational planning; information management; public relations; marketing; volunteer development; and ethical and legal issues.

Dates: February 21 to 26, 2005 with a preparatory assignment
Please register by: January 28, 2005
Fee: $550 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit); subject to change.

Instructor: Carrie Brooks-Joiner
Carrie Brooks-Joiner is the owner of the consulting firm Carrie Brooks-Joiner & Associates. The firm specializes in research and management in the non-profit sector. Carrie has been active in the culture and heritage community for two decades and brings expertise in government relations, governance, policy development, strategic planning and grantsmanship. She has held leadership positions in the nonprofit and public sectors including: Director of Planning, Policy & Board Coordination and A/Director Finance & Administration at Royal Botanical Gardens; A/Director of Cultural Development & Heritage and Museum Consultant for the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, Ontario Region. Earlier in her career she worked in several community museums and galleries across Ontario. Clients include three levels of government, cultural, heritage and social service organizations. As a volunteer, Carrie is the President of the Ontario Museum Association.

Carrie Brooks-Joiner & Associates co-led the 2004 Municipal Cultural Planning Inventory Project for the Ontario Ministry of Culture. The project established benchmarks on the state of cultural planning in municipalities, identified best practices and provided policy and program recommendations.

Her educational background includes a Masters of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management (with distinction) from York University. Carrie is a 2003 graduate of the Bay Area Leadership program.

This course is open to all staff or volunteers working in cultural institutions looking to build confidence and develop management skills.
