Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and on your perspective regarding virtual museums--very, very interesting!  I'm particularly struck by the notion of virtual museums as "memory institutions."  I'll have to give that further thought.

The resource I'm hoping to develop wouldn't be for my customers alone, but for the wider museum community as a whole (I hope to give back to a community that has given me so much!).  I'm particularly focused on the museums that I have the most experience in as a staff member and volunteer--the small museums and house museums who seem to have the least resources to bring to bear on a web presence.

 

Great idea! Especially for small museums it might be interesting to cooperate and join resources.

 

My ultimate goal is to show that there isn't that big a gap to bridge for small museums to have a "big museum" feel and presence online.  If a paper or presentation should come out of this, all the better.

 

A would be interested in learning more about your ideas. If you plan to present something, I would suggest the conference "Museums and the Web" (http://www.archimuse.com) or for a publication FirstMonday (www.firstmonday.dk).

I don't think that there is a generally accepted classification for museums, at least from a world-wide perspective. An additional remark: why not use a classification for web museums instead of a museum classification? I think this would make more sense because you want to tell your customers where they want to go in the digital world instead of what kind of museum they are in the physical world.

 

For the development of Virtual Museums please see my suggestions in the last ICOM News: http://icom.museum/virtual_museum.html. This classification might help your customers to decide what kind of web site they want to set up.

Hi, all--

 

I'm working on a white paper to help orient museum administrators to the web and to developing web sites--some background on HTML, web technologies such as ASP and Flash, hiring website consultants, finding funding sources, etc.

 

In conjunction with this, I wanted to study museum web sites in relation to the resources they had or have to bring to bear on their web sites.  Is there a generally-accepted classification for museums based on size, operating budget, and the like (similar to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education)?  It appears from one source (http://www.artstor.org/info/participation_info/museums_class.jsp) that there isn't, so they developed their own, but I thought I would go directly to the professionals involved to see if there is something generally accepted within the museum community.
