You are correct.  Also, Herr Hitler maintained an apartment in Munich. In 1945, American troops “liberated” a photo scrapbook, personal library books with Hitler’s scribble in the margins, and much tableware from that location as well.

You might see if you can determine what unit this soldier served with.  U.S. Forces did not take the bunker in Berlin but did get to the Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden.  Maybe the location changed names in the telling as is apt to happen.  If the man knows what unit the soldier was in, it might be possible to at least ascertain whether his unit could even have been in the vicinity.
