I personally think donors should be notified that items they donated are
being sold, but you certainly don't need their permission--especially if there was
a written understanding that their gifts would be used for collection
development in the first place.  I've stated previously that I think it's good donor
relations to notify them when their gifts are sold, traded, or transferred to
another institution--although a number of people disagreed with me.
