<http://jc-schools.net/PPTs-art.html#Visual%20Arts> . . . be VERY
cautious about using these presentations without verifying the contents.
There are some egregious inaccuracies in some of the presentations
available for download. Perhaps my first choice just happened to be
seriously flawed and the others are good? For example, in the "Art
History Over-view for 6 Grade" presentation, I discovered the following:

About Egyptian art: "This culture didn't change for 3000 years"
. . . FALSE!

About Greek art: "Nike of Somathrace" . . . misspelling.

The section entitled "Statues and Paintings: The Leaning Tower
of Pisa & The Coliseum" implies these two are of the same time period .
. . though the Coliseum in Rome was dedicated in 80 CE and the "Leaning"
Tower in Pisa was not begun until 1173 C.E. Yes, shared architectural
forms, but differing contexts.

Calligraphy was invented during the "Dark Ages"? FALSE!
Calligraphy -- meaning 'the art of fine handwriting' -- had already been
developed in ancient "non-Western" cultures including the Chinese,
Egyptians, Phoenicians, etc. Gothic calligraphy is just one style.

The Renaissance: "Humans began an age of rebirth." Wow . . . I
was not aware ALL humans were involved in the Italian (and subsequent
European) Renaissance. And, "Realism in Art became very important" . .
. or was it a combination of idealism and naturalism?

The Impressionists: "The first Impressionist artist were called,
'The Wild Animals.' FALSE! This confuses the Impressionists with the
Fauvists -- a group formed more than 30 years later (Matisse, Derain,
etc.). "Les fauves" means wild animals (or beasts).

These ideas are not too complicated to explain to 6th graders -- the
intended audience. So I wonder why the teacher has "dumbed it down" . .
.or, perhaps, the teacher was not really well-equipped to teach this
subject matter.

Sincerely,

j heuman
