Hammer & Hand: Contemporary American Metal 2004
is a juried exhibition that highlights the best work being produced in contemporary American metal today.  Opening at Calvin College's Center Art Galley in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 23rd, Hammer & Hand hopes to reveal new trends and ideas being produced by today's best metalsmiths.

The exhibition features the dynamic work of twenty-five artists from across the country.  Selected works, required to be made primarily of metal, include thirty-three pieces that incorporate traditional themes and innovative approaches.  Fanciful teapots, all manner of vessels, folding knives, and ornamented candlesticks are part of the artists' contemporary expression
Juror Anna Fariello is a former Renwick scholar at the Smithsonian Institution and material culture chair for the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. She is author of articles published in Metalsmith, Anvil's Ring, and American Craft and author of exhibition catalogs on well-known metalsmiths Samuel Yellin and Francis Whitaker.  Fariello is author and co-editor of the new book, Objects and Meaning: New Perspectives on Art and Craft, available from Scarecrow Press.
