Position: Manager, Professional
Development and Special Projects
The Museum is seeking a dynamic educator to be an integral part of our
in-house educational team. In the Fall 2004, Intrepid will open a brand new
18,000 square foot, state of the art, dedicated educational facility, which
will be home to an expanded series of educational offerings for teachers and
students. One of the central goals of the Education Center is to
create and launch a quality professional development program utilizing the resources
of the Intrepid Museum to support teaching and learning.
We are seeking an individual to organize, implement and manage this Professional
Development Program for teachers and other educators in the New
York City and Greater New York City educational communities. Responsibilities
include but are not limited to:
- Organizing and conducting appropriate professional
development workshops and conferences for teachers and other educators in
public and non-public schools in the NYC and Greater NYC regions using the
Intrepid as a resource for teaching city, state and national standards in
history, science, literacy and across the curriculum
- Developing partnerships with NYC DOE Central,
Regional and school staff, other public and non-public schools and school
systems, colleges and universities, businesses, other museums, etc. to strengthen
and expand the professional development program at the Intrepid
- Managing, coordinating and advising on grant
opportunities relevant to professional development
- Developing appropriate professional development
curricula and lesson plans that are content-rich and aligned to city,
state and national content standards, which meet standards for professional
development and which model best classroom practices
- Developing and overseeing development of
appropriate curricular and educational materials
- Advising on the acquisition of technology,
resource materials, supplies, etc. for relevant aspects of the Intrepid’s
Education Center; maintaining inventories of all purchases
- Recruiting participants for all professional
development sessions
- Working with respective university education
departments, teachers’ unions and teacher certification offices to
develop and coordinate in-service and credit bearing opportunities for
professional development program participants
- Recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and
evaluating future full-time and/or part-time staff developers
- Managing the professional development budget
- Establishing a data base, maintaining records and
analyzing data for program evaluation and recommendations
- Working with members of the Education Team at the
Intrepid to support and enhance the educational vision and programs for
students and educators
- Assisting in securing additional funds and
resources to expand and support professional development programs at the
Intrepid through grant writing, business partnerships, etc.
- Developing and coordinating special projects as
identified by Executive Director
In addition to the Professional Development program, this position will
also bear primary responsibility for the development and management of some other
educational programs and special projects for the 2004-2005 school year and
thereafter, in accordance with the plan of the Education Center,
including but not limited, to an Intrepid-based eminent speakers program
targeted to high school aged students.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- MA/MS in Education or Museum Studies or MA/MS in
subject area with BA/BS (major or minor) in Education
- Experience and success in organizing and conducting
professional development workshops and programs for teachers and other
educators
- Knowledge of grant process and grant writing
experience is preferred
- Familiarity with local, state and national
content standards for K – 12 education
- Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral
and written communication skills
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible
schedule including some weekends and late afternoons/early evenings, where
necessary to accommodate professional development offerings
- Background or special interest in American
history, science or literacy preferred
- Computer proficient: word processing, Excel, PowerPoint,
email, etc.
- Ability to directly contact current NYC DOE
employees in relation to the duties of the position
This position is a full time position with a comprehensive benefits
package starting August 2004; salary range is commensurate with experience.
