Don't Sweat the Big Stuff: Training for the Rigging & Moving of Fine Arts and Artifacts Instructors: Roger Machin & Dean Langworthy Date: July 26 - 30, 2004 NEH Scholarships Available The goal of this course is to train all participants how to safely plan and execute moves of heavy and/or fragile museum artifacts weighing up to 5000 lbs. The techniques taught in the course will be based on the utilization of equipment that is easily available to the museum and conservation professional. Also covered will be the techniques and equipment used only by a professional rigger, providing students with the knowledge to work successfully with professional riggers. The course will include lectures and hands-on experience, and will cover: A review of what "rigging" means for museums and conservators in private practice, along with a brief history of rigging techniques and technologies, followed by demonstrations of rigging equipment. Organizing a rigging crew and rigging boxes. Working with crates, pallets, and dunnage while protecting floors, surrounding structures, and lawn/landscape. Forklift training. Common rigging problems such as locating load centers, handling unbalanced and long loads, and supporting weak sections of an artifact. Specifying and ordering cranes.
