Good Afternoon All I would like to add to Steven's response below, by adding some personal remembrances about the use of flash bulbs prior to the 1980s (prior to cameras using an electronic flash device). Sometimes those use-only-once flash bulbs would explode, sending little pieces of burning metal shavings into the direction of the subject being photographed. This happened rarely, but enough to warrant the banning of flash bulbs from exhibit galleries. When I was a kid in the 1950s I remember being hit with the hot and burning filaments of an exploding flash bulb. My sister and I were truly "shot" in front of the Christmas tree. To be sure, it was an exciting Christmas. For those of too young to remember "flash bulbs" please see http://photonotes.org/cgi-bin/entry.pl?id=Flashbulb Personally, I find the use of electronic flash illumination in an exhibition gallery to be distracting (read: an annoyance) to the other visitors.
