A little background on the storage area—it is in a sub-basement (possibility of floods) of a relatively old building (~100 y.o. townhouse).  I don’t want carpeting because of the possibility of it getting wet and because of the dirt/dust.  We are hoping to replace the entire sub-basement floor with the same material (the rest of the sub-basement level is offices and work area), but we may be able to get a different type of floor for just the collections storage area.  We currently have vinyl tiles (glued to the cement floor, very old).  FYI, the area houses the majority of our collection (military memorabilia, weapons, textiles, you name it).

But carpet does hold on to dirt and dust and if you have wet collections is very difficult for cleaning up spills.  I would go with sealed concrete.  It’s not pretty but it doesn’t need to be in a collections storage area; you need easy to clean and as little off-gassing as possible.

What type of floor do you have now?  Are you in a basement with a concrete floor already?  Are you on an upper floor where you have a wood subflooring and need a new surface?  What kind of collections do you house?

The cheapest is going to be low pile carpet albiet, not as beautiful as other floors such as wood.  Carpet will not show the wear and scuffs from exhibit changes and installations, as well as foot traffic.  It is quieter as well.  You should consult with a conservator on the off gassing of various materials concern, and how long different materials take to completely off gas any harmful fumes, as well as what adhesives not to use.

I hope that some of you will be able to help me out.  We are looking at having the floors in our collections storage area replaced and I was wondering what sort of things I should be concerned about, as I have no experience in this area.  Do I need to worry about what type of flooring is installed, what type of glue is used, off-gassing, etc…?  Is there a certain type of floor and/or you would recommend?  Any help would be much appreciated—please reply off-list to [log in to unmask].  Thanks in advance!
