Cornelia Hancock was the
great-granddaughter of Judge William Hancock, who was massacred in the Hancock
House in 1778. Cornelia's mother Rachel was a strongly opinionated lady who
imparted her ambition, and her Quaker views on her daughter. Cornelia was
educated in Philadelphia as were many of the Nicholsons, her mothers
family.Lucretia Mott and Alice Paul are familiar names connected to
abolition and women' rights, but Cornelia did this and more. May 22 is the day
to find out more about this renaissance woman, a woman truly ahead of her
time.
It has been 140 years since
Cornelia left on her life's journeys which included the battlefield at
Gettysburg, the Freedman's school in Mount Pleasant SC, a trip to England and
her founding of the Children's Aid Society in Philadelphia. Cornelia also
assisted in the planning of Wrightsville, and to finance her endeavors worked
hotels in Spring Lake, NJ.
"Cornelia and Dr Dudley" will be on hand with a
display of Civil war medical items. Plan your day now to come and join
us.
