Spaces are still available for Upper Midwest Conservation Association’s workshop: Care of Paintings for Museum Professionals

 

This workshop will take place at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts on May 21, 2004.  The instructor will be Neil Cockerline, a professional paintings conservator with over 20 years experience.

 

Mr. Cockerline will focus on all aspects relating to the preservation of paintings collections, including: identifying painting structures and media; determining original materials from later additions; conducting condition examinations; documenting condition including using standard terminology; determining condition priorities (what damages can be easily restored and what restorations will be difficult and costly); proper storage techniques; basic cleaning and preservation techniques; framing and hardware, handling and shipping; what to look for when buying or accessioning paintings and when to seek professional assistance.  Participants will have the opportunity to examine and handle different types of paintings from many eras.  The workshop will include a slide/lecture presentation, discussions, demonstrations and hands-on practice.

 

Museum personnel such as: directors, curators, registrars, collections managers, docents, volunteers, and etc. are welcome to attend.  Private collectors and students are also welcome.

 

Fees for this workshop are $125 or $100 for UMCA members.  New discounted fees are available for institutions and students.  Institutions with budgets at or below $50,000 pay a rate of $75 / day or $50 / day if an UMCA member.  Full time, enrolled students pay a flat rate of $35 / day.
