The
diplomatic way to deal with this problem is to advertise that groups who
pre-register for those days will get expedited admission/special tour guides
and/or a special educational handout.

Subject: Discount and Free Days
This question
is for small to medium-sized museums. We are a medium-sized museum
located in the Chicago Suburbs. We offer an admiossion discount day on
Tuesdays, free for kids, but adults pay half-price. Lately we have had
problems with large groups showing up on Tuesdays, mostly day care centers but
sometimes schools. Sometimes they call ahead of time, sometimes they
just show up. Our policy has been that we don't take
reservations for groups wanting free admission for kids on Tuesdays, but at the
same time, we don't want several large groups to just show up without
warning. Our concern is more about being overwhelmed with crowds, less
about the loss of revenue from admissions. We don't want to turn groups away,
but we want all of our visitors to have a positive experience.
I was
wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems and what sort of
policies your institution may have in place.
Thank you for
your response,
Christina
