Carrie, It is not really a plan or policy as such, but I'll let you know what we do. Each object is professionally photographed when it enters the museum, which produces both slides and 4 x 5 transparencies. I usually produce simple, low-res digital images for our database, or just scan the slides. I am capable of producing higher quality digital images, but I often do not have the equipment available, so the pro often does that as well. The purpose of the transparencies is publication as well as documentation, but as more and more companies move to digital formats, we are thinking that film will cease to be necessary for our purposes. We will continue to do it for the time being, but I am suspecting that digital images will overtake traditional film for the majority of our applications. It will also save us quite a sum over the course of a year. We will still be able to get the transparencies and slides, but will likely move away from always getting them. The traditional images are stored in the object files. The digital images are stored on my hard drive and backed up to CD regularly. They are organized in the same way as the object files, by accession number. Hope that is helpful. Mark Janzen Registrar/Collections Manager Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art Martin H. We are looking at tightening the procedure for object photography, as well as developing database for accessing images. I am looking for specific policies regarding what types of images are taken for each object (film, digital, high-resolution, etc.) and how images are stored. I have searched on-line and in the list archives and I have only found reference to visitors taking photos in the galleries and photo reproduction fees.
