Dear Grant:

Liquor laws and licensing, appropriate distributors, amounts, liabilities, etc., are subject to each area's (yes, they can vary state by state, county by county and municipality by municipality) Alcohol and Beverage Control Board laws.

Like other associates, I am not a lawyer, yet I urge you to get the local ordinance and a legal opinion IN WRITING before you serve a drop of anything stronger than ice water.  Even if the person driving is not at fault, if there is an accident and alcohol was consumed at your facility by any of the participants in a wreck, your institution, the board, and the governing body (city, college, etc.) could be held liable.

PLEASE urge the appropriate person to contact the appropriate agency, because ignorance of the law is not an excuse.  One may be able to purchase wine and beer licenses for a one-night event.  They are expensive to get, but nothing like as expensive as the lawsuit(s) that could result from failing to get it.

Best,

Liz Bleiberg
