An endowed grant is probably one of the ultimate grants that could fund a person's start in this career field. Laura West Project Manager M&S Engineering, Ltd. BUT... a private donor or local foundation might be convinced to fund a position for a short (or renewable) term IF it can be shown that such a position will strengthen the museum in a given area that needs attention - such as a one-year grant to catalog a collection; a development or marketing position for an institution that doesn't have it; or someone to do outreach to schools and teacher training. If you made such a pitch, you'd want to identify a supporter or supporters who have show a strong desire to work with the museum to see it succeed (look at your board, your long-term funders), you would write a clear proposal with numbers showing how this would benefit the museum in the long run and help it to become more self-sustaining; with an evaluation process; and a plan for how the position might be funded in the future if all this succeeds (such as, now that the collection is cataloged we're eligible for new grant funding; or, now that we have a strong development/marketing plan in place the cash will be just rolling in; or, now that we've got the attention of teachers our field trip revenue will be up 500%....etc.).
